Anna Von Mertens

Anna Von Mertens Website

I recently had the opportunity to listen to a lecture give by this artist at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her work is very well crafted, conceptually interesting and political. It is certainly worth looking at her web site. Anna considers her work scultptural but has been sewing since she was a child.

Black and White is a diptych that examines the polarized way of seeing things only in black and white terms. The black sculpture (above) depicts the energy pattern of a nuclear explosion stitched in white thread, while the emanating radiation from the center is more subtle and silent, stitched in black. The accompanying white sculpture depicts the same drawing in reversed color thread, but the drawing is rotated in AutoCAD and seen from an aerial view, so the reference is abstracted.

PAQA-South Conference

We have many members that also belong to PAQA-South. Below is an attachment regarding a conference at the end of January. The Page Walker Arts and History Center is hosting the event. This may be a much needed break from what seems to be a cold winter. SAQA members receive a discounted conference fee.

Surface Design Summer Intensive-Julia Pfaff

Topics: Surface Design
3 credits
This intensive, focused class examines the use of dyes and pigments as surface design materials. Using a combination of drawing, printmaking, painting and monotype techniques, students will learn the basics of fabric design. Various aspects of design, color, pattern making, presentation and narrative will be examined with an emphasis on idea development. These dyes are colorfast, permanent and yield incredible color. Students will produce samples and lengths of finished fabric; those interested in repeating the class will be expected to work at an advanced level and produce several finished projects. No previous dyeing or painting experience is necessary. A fee of $55 covers dyes and fabric. More fabric will be purchased from the instructor during the class.
