Anna Von Mertens Website
I recently had the opportunity to listen to a lecture give by this artist at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her work is very well crafted, conceptually interesting and political. It is certainly worth looking at her web site. Anna considers her work scultptural but has been sewing since she was a child.

Black and White is a diptych that examines the polarized way of seeing things only in black and white terms. The black sculpture (above) depicts the energy pattern of a nuclear explosion stitched in white thread, while the emanating radiation from the center is more subtle and silent, stitched in black. The accompanying white sculpture depicts the same drawing in reversed color thread, but the drawing is rotated in AutoCAD and seen from an aerial view, so the reference is abstracted.
